The Stigmata is a cyclocross bike, a burly one at that. I bought it for something closer to exploring fire roads. But Charm City Cross is a pro cyclocross race held in the heart of Baltimore, at Druid Hill Park. Having never attended a race, I went to check it out.
It felt like cyclocross is a small community that it has some personality. It’s warm and welcoming.
Mud, plenty of it. This is a two day event on a short course. There are 8 heats per day, with the largest field having 150 riders. It rained the night before. The preferred line was quickly kneaded into a sticky mess.
Maybe 75% of riders were running SPD pedals. There were a few on flats but the remainder used Eggbeaters. These riders are good at getting off the bike smoothly and back on while keeping up momentum.
Twenty20 Cycling holds a cyclocross beginner’s course in early fall. I’ll attend that next year. Here’s their calendar: http://twenty20cycling.com/calendar/
