When the headline is a question, the answer is, “No.”
The day the bike was delivered, I packed it up and headed for our family’s farm in Pennsylvania for a long weekend. I haven't been on a bike in 5 years, and never on a cyclocross bike. I was excited to see what this machine could do in its native habitat and to start rebuilding my fitness.
This was not only my first ride in quite a while, but my first ride ever off-road ride with clipless pedals. They were SPDs, lent to me bike the bike shop that sold me the bike. My previous road bike had Look pedals.
Part of the property is on a mountain to the south of the house. It’s about 2,000 feet above the valley floor and intermingled with the Loyalsock State Forest. The mountain is criss-crossed with overgrown roads that were passible by car when my father spent summers on the farm as a boy. The climb is brutal; I saw 17% before giving up. I haven't got the legs for this yet. There’s also an approach from the south that I’ll explore on the next trip.
